Creating a poster with Canava is simple and easy. I chose to go with an aggressive message that could work towards classroom management by showing that their is dire consequences for bullying and that this room does not tolerate making others feel unwelcome. Every classroom should be a safe place for all, and the dangers of harassing someone need to be full-front-and center.
But this app, and others like Adobe Spark, go far beyond the usefulness of mere classroom decorations. Having students create their own images in order to make a poster for a novel, poem, or research topic is an excellent way to have students exercising the curriculum through creativity and really engage them in the material.
Knowing how to ensure text choices are readable and conveying proper tone, how to center images for with the rule of 3’s for an optimal focal point, and how to search for images that can be reused and are of appropriate size are just some of the excellent skills that working with these applications provide.
